Illness can be a good motivator, when a loved one is on their death bed or one is given a month to live a crazy adventure is almost inevitable. Foster talks about how authors can use different ailments to describe a persons character and the situation everyone is in. For Example in the folk tale about John Henry, the beast of a man challenges the steam engine to save the jobs of his friends and family. He is a strong young man but after beating the engine, in some recolections of the story he collapses and dies from his heart failing. To have such a proud, fit young man die from a heart attack after beating a machine is simply applicable. If the story went, and then he died from syphillis the story just wouldnt make sense. Speaking of syphillis, an author uses this to create another twist in the story, if a character has syphillis eye-brows are raised because they must have slept-around.
In the story, the Yellow Wallpaper the wife is affect by the mental illness, of nervous depression. With such an illness the author is able to portray the struggles the woman goes through because everything "queer" she sees is blamed on her illness and no one believes her.
